Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
