Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Context for Owner Penalties

This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:

• Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
